To all Toyota owners-a recall however has arisen for some vehicles. Toyota has to grin and bear a troublesome and financially devastating recall due to one of its twin-turbo V6 engines developing a defect.
Which models are affected?
The recall includes Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX models manufactured between November 2021 and February 2023. What is the issue? The defect results from residual materials left in the engine during manufacturing, which can lead to serious damage like minor engine detonations, power loss, or even total engine failure, raising accident risks.
Toyota’s response to the recall
In May, Motortrend reported that Toyota filed a report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), indicating that a full solution for the 102,092 potentially affected vehicles had yet to be determined. Toyota estimates that about 1% of these vehicles might experience this issue, though this figure was calculated based on system criteria rather than actual failure rates.
After months of investigation, Toyota still lacks a precise number of affected vehicles and has decided to replace engines that may have defects. This is a costly but comprehensive solution for customers, covering labor and engine replacements.
This defect first surfaced in 2022 after a customer reported stalling. Since then, Toyota has received 166 technical reports and 824 warranty claims, which led to further investigation and the discovery of manufacturing residue in the engine. Toyota promptly began addressing the issue.
What should affected drivers do?
Toyota will contact affected owners directly, though this recall only applies to non-hybrid versions of the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. Toyota will notify customers by the end of the month, likely directing them to their nearest dealership for an engine replacement.
Although it is typically rare, Toyota has executed several recalls in the last five years involving defective fuel pumps, hybrid software, airbags, and seat belts. Quality and safety are very important to the Toyota brand; hence, in the event of a defect, the company will act quickly to ensure customer and road safety.
